IVSA Latvia - Get to know us
The International Veterinary Students’ Association (IVSA) is a student-run organization that represents over 38.000 students from over seventy countries. Our Association strives to benefit the animals and humans of the world by harnessing the potential and dedication of veterinary students to promote the international application of veterinary skills, education, and knowledge. Hereby, one of its main goals is to raise the overall standard of veterinary education worldwide.
IVSA is your voice in international veterinary medicine organizations. We are invited to discussions and meetings to represent the opinion of veterinary students on a global level, for example, during congresses from different partner organizations of IVSA, like WVA (World Veterinary Association), EAEVE, WOAH, WSAVA, and many more.
IVSA members get the chance to participate in exchange programs, which allows our members to do individual or group exchanges at veterinary faculties in other IVSA units.
IVSA Latvia brings together all the veterinary students from the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LBTU). IVSA Latvia strives to unite veterinary students from all over the world by organizing and taking part in cultural exchanges but also providing its members with interesting opportunities and fun activities throughout the year. IVSA Latvia offers its members a network of veterinary students and friends all over the world, cultural exchanges with various countries, opportunities to advance your skills and lifetime experiences.
New members are usually admitted annually in September but it is possible to join IVSA Latvia all year around. The requirements for membership are being a vet student and payment of the membership fee. Members that want to take their membership to the next level are encouraged to become a Board member. Every year in September the nominations and elections for our Board take place.

IVSA Latvia - Student testimonials

"Dare to be different, that is what brought me to Latvia. I would never have thought that being a Board member of IVSA Latvia would bring me in contact with people all across the globe. But here I am, enjoying the study process and student life to the fullest. Studying at the LBTU is for me the best decision I have ever made!" - Violet Adeline Wierbos, 3rd year student from Belgium. |

"I joined IVSA Latvia because I wanted to get more involved into my university’s social life, make my time at university more diverse and find likeminded people. During my first year at IVSA and as a Junior EO, we achieved some memorable things. IVSA has taught me to take responsibility, improved my time management skills and creativity, made me step out of my comfort zone more, but also given me fun moments and a chance to make new friendships! Hopefully I can keep contributing to IVSA Latvia in my upcoming study years ;)" - Evija Medvedeva, 3rd year student from Latvia. |

"I chose to study I Latvia due to the small and practical classes. I would highly recommend the University of Life Sciences and Technologies to anyone who would like to discover new cultures and get more hands-on experience in their studies. Since everyone in your course starts anew in a different country, you also make close friends for life." - Elena Koopmans, 4th year student from The Netherlands. |

"I experience that IVSA Latvia has a great potential. Sadly, we are only a few people who are really active. A lot of structure and experience got lost during Covid, which should be restored. Being the Exchange Officer was a lot of work. While trying to make the best out of it, it was an experience which enriched my life." - Franziska Früh, 3rd year student from Germany. |
|
"From my 1st year of studies, I have been interested in what the student life is like for the international students at our faculty. Participating in IVSA brought me closer to my international course mates and gave me a chance to get to know international students from other years. I have also participated in two IVSA exchanges, and those experiences changes my perspective on many things. For me, IVSA is a way to connect and share experiences with veterinary students from other countries." - Marija Ostrovska, 5th year student from Latvia. |

"Studying Veterinary Medicine in Latvia is an adventure I would have never dared to take on a few years ago, but it was the best decision I’ve ever made. Even though the language barrier can be tough sometimes, it is still a very special once-in-a-lifetime experience, which I never would have wanted to miss." - Meike Faber, 3rd year student from The Netherlands. |

"Our university offers an effective study program in Veterinary Medicine”. As an international student, I get a lot of practical knowledge and skills to become and efficient vet. It gives you international exposure to meet other people and universities. I am a proud student and happy to be studying at this university." - Abdullah Mohamed Sherief, 3rd year student from India. |

"The university offers a lot of practical subjects in small groups. You get a lot of attention from teachers and are not just a number. Here are great opportunities to learn and explore, for example the Erasmus+ programs. By studying Veterinary Medicine in Latvia, you really get the chance to become more than just and average vet!" - Veerle Maessen, 3rd year student from The Netherlands. |

"The professors are kind and have a heart for their students and faculty. They have a lot of patience and care a lot about the students. We learn a lot of practical stuff and are trusted to try things ourselves. Oh yeah, the country has a lot of forests as well as some cool castles to check out. Also, garlic bread would recommend 10/10." - Philip Nicklas Engwerth, 5th year student from Germany |
