The institute was established in 2000 by merging the Anatomy and Physiology departments. This reorganization was performed before the accreditation of FVM study programmes in March, 2001.

The institute specializes in areas of Morphology, Physiology and Pathology.

The Director of the institute, from 2024, is Assistant Professor Astra Ārne.
